Earlier this summer people were invited to participate in a survey regarding interests in a statewide preservation and digital collections group. A small planning group has been looking at all the responses and determining how best we can organize to address the needs and interests expressed through the surveys.
In response we are creating what we are currently calling the Michigan Collections Network. “A network interested in preserving and providing access to print and digital library and archive collections.”
It is our hope that this network will help facilitate the sharing of information and experiences amongst network members and all those interested. Things are still in the incubation stage but some tools we hope to use to help us all share and learn are this listserv, a website/blog, and occasional in person and online gatherings.
We are planning our first gathering on the topic of grant funding for collections. It is tentatively planned for the afternoon of November 14, at the Library of Michigan. We hope to also be able to share these events to the further reaches of the state through the internet and we are exploring what options are available to us.
We hope this network, through the listserv, a website, and gatherings can assist those who work with library and archive collections to share experiences, ask questions, and learn from each other.
