SAA Writing & Publishing Award Nominations

The Society of American Archivists is soliciting recommendations for writing and publishing awards for excellence. There are five awards up for grabs with varying prize amounts. All submissions must have been produced during 2022.

Note that you can apply or be nominated for multiple awards in a single cycle, but will only receive one. The deadline for nominations is February 28, 2023.

Reminder: Call for Applicants, SAA Mosaic Scholarship (2/28/2016 deadline)

Friendly reminder: The application period for the Society of American Archivists’ (SAA) Mosaic Scholarship is currently open, with a deadline of February 28, 2016.

The Mosaic Scholarship was established to provide financial and mentoring support to minority students pursuing graduate education in archival science, to encourage students to pursue careers in archives, and to promote the diversification of the American archival profession. The award is given to applicants who demonstrate excellent potential for scholastic and personal achievement and who manifest a commitment both to the archival profession and to advancing diversity concerns within it.

Up to two scholarships of $5,000 each will be awarded, contingent on available funds. In addition, each scholarship recipient receives a one-year complimentary membership to SAA and complimentary registration to the Society’s Annual Meeting.

SAA: J. Franklin Jameson Archival Advocacy Award

The J. Franklin Jameson Archival Advocacy Award Subcommittee of the Society of American Archivists seeks nominations for the 2016 award.

Established in 1989, this award honors an individual, institution, or organization that promotes greater public awareness, appreciation, or support of archival activities or programs.  The individual’s or institution’s contributions may take the form of advocacy, publicity, legislation, financial support, or a similar action that fosters archival work or raises public consciousness of the importance of archival work.  Contributions should have broad, long-term impact at the regional level or beyond. Up to three awards may be given each year.

SAA Preservation Publication Award

The Society of American Archivists Preservation Publication Award Subcommittee is seeking nominations for the prestigious Preservation Publication Award. Do you know of an outstanding preservation-related work published in 2012? Would you like to see the author(s) or editor(s) recognized for contributing to preservation and the archives profession? Please consider submitting a nomination prior to the deadline of February 28, 2013.

SAA Distinguished Service Award

The Society of American Archivists’ (SAA) Distinguished Service Award Subcommittee seeks nominations for the 2013 award. The deadline for submitting applications is February 28, 2013.

Created in 1964 and revised in 1993, this award recognizes an archival institution, education program, nonprofit organization, or government organization that has provided outstanding service to its public and has made an exemplary contribution to the archives profession. The institution being nominated should have achieved distinction in one or more of the following ways:

— Demonstrably contributing to archival theory and the development of new archival practice.
— Serving its constituency in an outstanding fashion.
— Showing extraordinary ingenuity and resourcefulness in improving efficiency of operations or methods of work.
— Going well beyond the normal performance requirements expected of an archival agency and thus providing a model for others.
— Developing over a period of years an archives program of such depth and scope as to warrant special recognition.

Harold T. Pinkett Minority Student Award

Call for Applications:
The application period for the 2013 Harold T. Pinkett Minority Student Award is now open!
The Pinkett Award was established in 1993 and recognizes and acknowledges minority graduate students, such as those of African, Asian, Latino or Native American descent, who, through scholastic and personal achievement, manifest an interest in becoming professional archivists and active members of the Society of American Archivists. The recipients of the award will receive full complimentary registration to the SAA Annual Meeting and related expenses for hotel and travel for attending the SAA Annual Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana in August 2013. In addition, each recipient receives a complimentary one-year membership in SAA.

Eligibility:
The Pinkett Award is awarded to minority students, with preference given to full-time students possessing a minimum scholastic grade point average of 3.5 while enrolled in a graduate program focusing on archival management during the academic year proceeding the date on which the award is given.

SOCIETY OF AMERICAN ARCHIVISTS: Philip M. Hamer and Elizabeth Hamer Kegan Award

The Philip M. Hamer and Elizabeth Hamer Kegan Award Subcommittee of the Society of American Archivists seeks nominations for the 2012 award.

This award recognizes an archivist, editor, group of individuals, or institution that has increased public awareness of a specific body of documents through compilation, transcription, exhibition, or public presentation of archives or manuscript materials for educational, instructional, or other public purpose. Archives may include photographs, films, and visual archives. Publication may be in hard copy, microfilm, digital, or other circulating medium.

Recent winners include:
• 2011 University of Wisconsin—Milwaukee Libraries March On Milwaukee Civil Rights History Project Team
• 2010 The Giza Archives Project at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
• 2009 Ward M. Canaday Center for Special Collections of the University of Toledo’s “From Institution to Independence”
• 2008 Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and the CBC Digital Archives (Les Archives de Radio-Canada)
